:This course examines the role of mentally disordered individuals within the criminal justice system. Particular emphasis is devoted to assessing the interaction between the criminal justice and mental health systems. The course format is highly interactive. Students will receive presentations from a number of participants in the legal/mental health system including judges, lawyers, psychiatrists and police officers. Students will be required to attend the Ottawa Mental Health Court. There will also be opportunities for small groups of students to attend hearing of the Ontario Review Board and/or the Consent and Capacity Board. Lectures will provide students with the fundamental concepts necessary for legal practitioners working with mentally disordered individuals.
